Tunesday : Throwing in the Towel

Throwing in the Towel
(Clay, J., Levine, J., Chance, Z.)

Soda, I'm really a mess
Every night I worry myself to sleep
While you're watching cartoons
There ain't nothing I can do for you
I know that Ponyboy's really got a damn good heart
Something 'bout him that really could take him far
But I keep holding him down
I've run this family right into the ground
Maybe you'd be best without me
I don't know what else to say
I lost our brother and I lost my way
I think a fool could'a done better
Maybe I've been afraid to say
That I'm just not cut out for this
Just another failure on a growing list
And it's harder now than ever
It's more than I can take
There ain't no one to bail me out
There ain't no saving this now
I think I'm throwing in the towel
On the days when you feel
Like you're torn in two
Making dinner, paying bills that are overdue
You think that I don't see?
It'd go to hell if it was left up to me
And I don't know what we would do
If you were not around
The one to keep the ship afloat
When it's going down
Darrel, I need you
And anyone can see that Pony does too
I know you love him
That's all you gotta do
And I don't know what else to say
I know you feel like you've lost your way
But I think you're doing better
Better than you know
If he comes back there's a price to pay
What if they lock our brother away?
There ain't no way of knowin'
We've gotta get our brother home
This is the darkest hour of the darkest night
Looking up ahead you can't see no light
But the time is now or never
There ain't no letting go
You might feel like you're givin' out
We need you more than ever now
Don't go throwing in the towel
I know your head is full of doubt
But brother, that's what love is all about
Don't go throwing in the towel
When you love someone
That's all that you can do
There ain't no throwing in the towel

The grade eight teacher at my elementary school always chose to real aloud The Outsiders to his class, and when I was in grade six, he created a musical performance out of the story for the whole school, with him reading connecting bits and his students dancing, lip-syncing, pantomiming to appropriate songs (the only song I specifically remember is Cherry singing I Don't Know How to Love Him from Jesus Christ Superstar after she first meets Ponyboy). I was one of those students who tended to be volunteered for things during school hours, so I was put on loan to this production to be a spotlight operator. I stood on a stepladder with a filmstrip projector and followed the action, the most exciting scene being the chaos the spotlights brought to the big rumble. The Outsiders would have been the first novel we ever studied, and the fact that I had become intimate with the story years before I actually read the book, made it very personal to me; wrapped up with my time in elementary school and my relationships with my own brothers. Because of this, and despite having been the targeted audience when the movie was released in 1983, I never saw it — that was the first time that I just intuitively knew that the book was too precious to watch on film, or ever reread.

But when Kennedy mentioned that she was going to the stage production in Toronto, and that the run was ending this past Sunday, Dave and I decided to go as well. Soon after we were seated, an elegantly dressed older woman (she had happened to mention that she graduated high school in 1969) sat beside me and we began discussing the book at her prompting. She told me that The Outsiders is the favourite novel of a fifty-something-year-old friend — who told her she must see the musical — and I shared the fact that I had read it in school but had declined to see the movie in order not to spoil my memories. We had a lovely conversation as we waited for the curtain to rise.

The first half of the show was a little slow — maybe because it was the touring cast, or perhaps that's just the way it always is; Dave and I were a little nonplussed as we discussed it at the intermission. But it certainly picked up in the second half, and when it got to this song, with the two brothers singing about their lost brother, everything hit me in a swirl of missing my recently deceased older brother and tears started streaming down my face. I turned to Dave and said, "It got me," and his eyes were teary too. (The final song by Dallas, Little Brother, was so powerful and so visceral and so well performed that the tears then came for real.)

When the show was over, the woman beside me said, "So what did you think?" I said, "Well, it made me cry." And she said, "I know. I was going to offer you a tissue, but then I started crying, too."

Any art that touches this jaded heart is a total win in my books. Stay gold, my brother.

You might feel like you're givin' out
We need you more than ever now
Don't go throwing in the towel
I know your head is full of doubt
But brother, that's what love is all about
Don't go throwing in the towel
When you love someone
That's all that you can do
There ain't no throwing in the towel

Tunesady : Mantra

Mantra
(Burrows, J., Martin, J., Chatwood, S.) Performed by The Tea Party

a thousand dreams within
within me softly burn
they burn the savage soul
that twisted what it learned
i feel this life slipping by
i can feel this life slipping by
desire is a state
a state of ill repair
it's ill prepared to cope
it's ill prepared to care
i feel this life slipping by
i can feel this life slipping by
time and time life's left me only
feeling sick and feeling scared
now love is strong
my love is strong
i'll go on and on and on and on and on
mercy is the cry of the soul that stirred
beneath the creeping vine
a flower tries to change
it tries to satisfy
it's thirst without the rains
i feel this change coming on
i can feel this change coming on
time and time life's left me only
feeling sick and feeling scared
now love is strong my love is strong
i'll go on and on and on and on and on
mercy is the cry of the soul that stirred
mercy is the cry and it's never heard
love is all we have
love is all we need

I had noticed there were a couple of concerts coming up that I thought my nephew, Conor, might enjoy seeing, so I sent him a couple of options and he chose The Tea Party. And the more I thought about how lame it would be for him to go with his aging auntie (me) in tow, the more I thought that it could be a bigger group of us; invite the whole family and make it a birthday party for him. In the end, only his mother was free, and since she was retiring this week, we made it a party of four, to celebrate them both.

We started the evening at our favourite Greek restaurant beside the theatre — free parking for the evening for dinner guests is one of my favourite life hacks — and I thought that it was pretty cool that the famously picky eater, Conor, ordered a gyro and Greek salad dinner and enjoyed the whole thing. (He has apparently never had Greek food before — not even in Greece — so that felt like a win for me.)

We walked over to Centre in the Square for the concert, and again, I was surprised to learn that Conor had never been there before (Laura had only been once), so from the start, the evening was kind of magical.

And although I don't know if I've ever even heard The Tea Party on the radio, the band totally blew us away. Such confidence and bravura performance. Maybe not the kind of music Dave and I would choose to listen to, but they put on an amazing show that totally worked as a celebration for these family members who have experienced such loss this year.

Tunesday : White and Nerdy

White and Nerdy
Written and Performed by "Weird Al" Yankovic

They see me mowin'
My front lawn
I know they're all thinking
I'm so white 'n' nerdy
Think I'm just too white 'n' nerdy
Think I'm just too white 'n' nerdy
Can't you see I'm white 'n' nerdy?
Look at me, I'm white 'n' nerdy!
I wanna roll with
The gangsters
But so far they all think
I'm too white 'n' nerdy
Think I'm just too white 'n' nerdy
Think I'm just too white 'n' nerdy
I'm just too white 'n' nerdy
Really, really white 'n' nerdy
First in my class here at M.I.T
Got skills, I'm a champion at D&D
MC Escher, that's my favorite MC
Keep your 40, I'll just have an Earl Grey tea
My rims never spin to the contrary
You'll find that they're quite stationary
All of my action figures are cherry
Stephen Hawking's in my library
My-MySpace page is all totally pimped out
I got people begging for my top 8 spaces
Yo, I know Pi out to a thousand places
Ain't got no grills but I still wear braces
I order all of my sandwiches with mayonnaise
I'm a whiz at Minesweeper, I can play for days
Once you see my sweet moves you're gonna stay amazed
My fingers movin' so fast I'll set the place ablaze
There's no killer app I haven't run
At Pascal well I'm number one
Do vector calculus just for fun
I ain't got a gat but I gotta soldering gun
Happy Days is my favorite theme song
I can sure kick your butt in a game of ping pong
I'll ace any trivia quiz you bring on
I'm fluent in JavaScript as well as Klingon
They see me roll on my Segway
I know in my heart they think I'm
White 'n' nerdy
Think I'm just too white 'n' nerdy
Think I'm just too white 'n' nerdy
Can't you see I'm white 'n' nerdy?
Look at me, I'm white 'n' nerdy!
I'd like to roll with
The gangsters
Although it's apparent I'm too
White n' nerdy
Think I'm just too white 'n' nerdy
Think I'm just too white 'n' nerdy
I'm just too white 'n' nerdy
How'd I get so white 'n' nerdy?
I've been browsing, inspectin'
X-Men comics you know I collect 'em
The pens in my pocket, I must protect 'em
My ergonomic keyboard never leaves me bored
Shopping online for deals on some writable media
I edit Wikipedia
I memorized the Holy Grail really well
I can recite it right now and have you "ROTFLOL"
I got a business doing websites
When my friends need some code who do they call?
I do HTML for them all
Even made a homepage for my dog
Yo, I got myself a fanny pack
They were having a sale down at the GAP
Spend my nights with a roll of bubble wrap
Pop pop! Hope no one sees me get freaky!
I'm nerdy in the extreme
And whiter than sour cream
I was in AV club and Glee club
And even the chess team!
Only question I ever thought was hard
Was do I like Kirk or do I like Picard?
I spend every weekend at the Renaissance Faire
I got my name on my underwear!
They see me strollin'
They laughin'
And rollin' their eyes 'cause
I'm so white 'n' nerdy
Just because I'm white 'n' nerdy
Just because I'm white 'n' nerdy
All because I'm white 'n' nerdy
Holy cow, I'm white 'n' nerdy!
I wanna bowl with
The gangsters
But oh well it's obvious I'm
White 'n' nerdy
Think I'm just too white 'n' nerdy
Think I'm just too white 'n' nerdy
I'm just too white 'n' nerdy
Look at me, I'm white 'n' nerdy!

Mal and I went to Niagara Falls to see Weird Al on Sunday evening (Mal's birthday present this year) and we had a whole lot of fun. We thought it would be funny to show up in matching Hawaiian shirts, but as it turns out, all the white and nerdy cool kids in the audience were wearing Hawaiian shirts; quite a few even had a pattern with accordians on them that I have to assume are sold through Yancovic himself. I did find it bemusing that Weird Al did his big hit "Fat" wearing the fat suit and everything so I asked Mal later if that seemed inappropriate in 2026, and as socially conscious as Mal is, we concluded that it was OK: the audience at a Weird Al Yankovic concert understands that the joke is a parody of Michael Jackson's monster song "Bad" and its amazing video (a definite punching up) and not a joke about a fat person dancing around (which would be a lazy swat downwards). Without that context, it might be a bit offensive to the uninformed viewer, but we also agreed that the uninformed don't have a right to never be offended.

The opening act (nowhere did it say there would be an opening act) was Puddles Pity Party, and although I had never seen him perform (I have seen his image around online), I was fairly enchanted by his sad clown schtick; he can definitely sing. Mal was less amused; his ironic multimedia performance didn't land as funny to Mal (or to the young boy beside me who moped and fidgeted through the whole thing).

It was cool that Weird Al came in singing through the entrance nearest to us (just steps away), and then it felt like a party. He did all the songs I knew and a whole bunch I didn't — he even performed the themesong he wrote for the Captain Underpants movie, clips from the film playing along on a big screen — and every time focus shifted to the big screen after a number, Weird Al (and often a bunch of his band members) would appear in costume (Amish, Ricky and Lucy, white and nerdy), and the big encore had everyone return to stage in costumes from the various Star Wars movies, doing a song that Mal knew and was expecting.

Yo, I got myself a fanny pack
They were having a sale down at the GAP
Spend my nights with a roll of bubble wrap
Pop pop! Hope no one sees me get freaky!

Overall, it was a really fun evening, and especially because I got to spend it with just Mal; something that never happens often enough.
