Mind Picking : Of Apes and Men

Just last weekend, Kennedy told Dave that the Digital Film Festival was coming up again -- a couple of years ago they drove through some nasty weather for over an hour just to see Firefly together on the big screen in Stoney Creek -- and Dave said that he wished someday they would put The Planet of the Apes in a movie theater because he had never seen it there before. How weird are our lives, then, that Kennedy looked on Monday and saw that POTA would indeed be a part of this year's lineup? Of course we got tickets, even Zach said that he was "totally in", and we made plans to go to a new restaurant and stalk the theater lobby early to get the best seats.

The best part? Kennedy and Zach took a chance and went to the Bluenotes outlet to see if they could get us matching monkey shirts -- and they found these totally POTA Go Ape shirts for us:

Yep, that's us nerding out in the front row, too, which is a good thing because there was a preshow trivia contest we hadn't known about. Dave got the first question (he had his hand in the air when the girl was only halfway through asking her question -- what two actors from the original movie [hand goes up] had cameos in the 2001 remake -- and he won a pass to some other movie event they have), she called on someone other than Dave for the second question despite his waving hand, and I got the third -- what book was the original POTA movie based on -- and won a second pass. We didn't realise until later that Mallory had never seen the movie all the way through -- how did that happen in this house?? -- and she took notes so she could discuss with her Dad what her favourite parts were. Her final analysis: "it holds up surprisingly well", lol.

On Saturday, Dave and I went to the Night to Nurture Gala in Toronto. These work-related dinners are never my favourite things -- sitting at a table with people I don't know while Dave talks business or laughs at inside office jokes. Bah. I'm not that sociable.

So it was a nice surprise that I had such a good time -- his coworkers (he has been at this office for only a year and I hadn't met any of them before and he's about to switch to another job right away so I didn't think I needed to meet them anyway) are interesting people and the Maroon 5 concert was amazing and we had a blast dancing to the house band later with his coworker Scott and his wife (don't you hate when you don't catch someone's name and then you hang out with her for 10 hours and there's never an appropriate time to ask, "What's your name again?"). We were back at the hotel by 1:30 but sat with this couple in the closed cocktail lounge until nearly 3, reminiscing about Edmonton.

Of course yesterday I was a basket case, laid on the couch watching TV most of the day while Dave, who was also exhausted, the same Dave who muscled his way to the front of the audience the night before just to get me some pictures of my secret boyfriend Adam Levine, went back to the theater with Kennedy and Zach to see POTA again. (And this time Kennedy answered the only trivia question they asked -- which actor had his first nude scene in the original POTA -- and she won two passes to any movie at the theater.)

Okay, so Adam Levine might have been named People Magazine's sexiest man alive, but I'll take a guy like my Dave all day long -- what's more attractive than a fun-loving family man?

Edit on February 4th to add:

Our whirlwind weekend didn't stop there either. Last night we went to see the stage production of Rock of Ages -- and why don't we know better than to see the road show of a mediocre musical? It was all just okay, and we don't have anything to compare it to since we haven't seen the movie (ew @ Tom Cruise in anything), but the audience was really into it, laughing so HUGELY at scenes that were just okay that I assumed they had all seen the movie and were laughing at what they were remembering instead of what they were seeing. If I had a real complaint -- who brings little kids to a show like that? Maybe the movie was less raunchy but I was embarrassed for the little girls who had the front row seats to the stripper poles.

As a fun preshow event, there were hairdressers in the lobby to 80s-up people's hair and some were getting faux-hawks and some were getting teased and crimped and I let Dave talk me into getting my hair done -- and she just put it in a side ponytail. "Your hair doesn't even need anything done to it," says the hairdresser. Made me feel like a bit of a twit.

But, once again, Dave was a great sport and we had a good time, like we always do.
